What you can expect from a policy or practice review

Utilize to review and update your employee handbook with other organizational policies using a racial equity focus

Offered in partnership with the McNary Group, Stamey Street’s policy and practice review includes a review of organizational policies and practices using an approach that centers racial equity and identifies other forms of inequities. The review notes areas of strength, areas for additional examination, content flags (e.g., language and framing), and system needs (e.g., accessibility) across selected internal policies. Executive leaders chose this service when they want to ensure that internal policies align with organizational commitments, mission, vision, and values.

Dr. Scott offers two types of policy review services:

  1. We’ll review your organization’s entire policy handbook and any stand alone policies for language updates (for example, removing binary language), policies where there is no system to guide staff on how to comply, and updates based on current HR practice.

  2. A selection of policies — up to 5, using the same process but on a smaller scale. Executive leaders will choose this service when working with a limited budget, when they have adopted new policies that have not been integrated into the employee handbook yet, or they already know where the pain points are in the employee experience.

Recommended for nonprofits or businesses in Phase 2 or 3.

A policy or practice review includes

  • Policy review of your organization’s personnel manual or selected policies

  • HR best practices from a racial equity perspective

  • Flags for problematic framing and word choices

  • Policy revisions based on HR best practices with a systems review

  • Tools that clients can use in future revisions and in other areas

  • Project debrief at the end of the project with a systems check

How to start an engagement

We start each engagement with an in-depth discovery process that produces an “Equity Why” for the project before we start our work together. Here are two things to know about Stamey Street’s discovery process.

  1. It is often more than one phone call, though a call is how we start an engagement.

  2. I’ll want to connect with a small group of staff as part of the process.
